The programme of the opening concert of the masterclass organized within the framework of the 2nd Carpathian Basin Classical Music Festival was compiled from the works of Béla Bartók by Jutta Bokor, mezzosoprano, the president of the committee of the Bartók Music House Rákoshegy, and Tamás Kereskedő, pianist. Bartók lived in the building between 1912 and 1920. The Three Burlesques, the last three of the Eight Hungarian Folk Songs and the op. 15. Lied-cycle were all composed during this period. The concert programme illustrates Bartók’s art from several angles. The Burlesques exemplify his attraction to the grotesque, while the Two Romanian Dances are among Bartók’s earliest works inspired by Romanian folk music. The main source of his inspiration was the 1909 collecting tour in Bihar County. The op. 15 cycle was conceived after his Slovak collecting tour, on poems by two female acquaintances. It was composed very close to the songs on the poems of Endre Ady. The Five Songs, as they are known now, were only published after Bartók’s death.
